The old name of Tangier is composed of “Tin”, which is a feminine particle that could be translated as “owner” or “she who has”, and “gi” which may have originally been “ig”, meaning “high location”. This corresponds to the popular Moroccan phrase Tanja l-aalya (Tangier the High), which may be a remnant echo of the original meaning, as well as a reference to the high location of Tangier.
